The septuagenarian was said to have died in a hotel in the Government Reservation Area of Benin City at about 1pm.
One of the sons of the deceased, who refused to give his name, said that his father left home 45 minutes before the tragic incident.
“We were called by the police to come to the Benin Central Hospital, only to see my father’s corpse. When we enquired, the doctors on duty said my father was brought stone-dead to the hospital.”
The woman was also present at the hospital but policemen ferried her away to prevent the mob from getting the better of her.
The corpse was deposited at the Central Hospital mortuary.
The Edo state Police image-maker, DSP Moses Equavoen, when contacted yesterday, said the command is yet to be briefed on the incident.
