Liverpool defender, Sakho in drug scandal, faces 6 months ban

imageLiverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is in the storm of scandal. He faces a long term ban over doping and this is a sign of trouble for the club doing well in the Europa competition. The potential doping issue surrounding Mamadou Sakho is the latest and possibly most serious blow to Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool enter the business end of the season.
Already shorn of Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and Divock Origi for the Europa League semi-final against Villarreal and probably the season, he must now face up to life without Kop cult hero Sakho for six months.
The centre-half – dubbed The Eiffel Tower as a youngster in France because of his size and power – has been a slow burner since he signed for Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers in 2013, part of a joint-£25million deal with Tiago Ilori.
imageBut in recent months Sakho has blossomed, nailing down a regular first-team place at Anfield for the first time and scoring his first goal of the season in the incredible 4-3 Europa League win against Borussia Dortmund on April 14, followed up by another in the Merseyside derby against Everton on Wednesday night.
He has become an idol among the fans who love the beefy defender for his willingness to do a trick, even deep in his own half. They can look clumsy, they can be close to catastrophe, but they nearly always work.
After he scored against Everton, he ran to his good mate Kolo Toure on the substitutes bench to celebrate. Ironically, Toure – himself banned for six months for taking prohibited dietary tablets as a Manchester City player in 2011 – was Sakho’s replacement against Newcastle.
Everton legend Peter Reid highlighted a thumping tackle by Sakho on James McCarthy as epitomising the spirit sweeping through Klopp’s Liverpool.
Based in Formby, a popular haunt for Liverpool players dating back to the time of Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen, Sakho is described as gregarious and popular among his team-mates.
