‘Hunger pushed me into robbery’, Says suspect Taiye Adelowo

A 22-year-old suspected member of a robbery gang, Taiye Adelowo, arrested by policemen attached to Isheri Oshun Division in Lagos, has said he was pushed into the act by hunger.
The suspect and three other members of his gang stormed a building on Mohammed Lawal Street at about 2.30a.m., yesterday.
It was gathered that when they discovered they could not access the owner’s flat from the main entrance, Adelowo reportedly went in through the window of the master’s bedroom toilet.
However, the toilet door, which leads directly to the owner’s bedroom, was also locked.
The source said Adelowo reportedly forced the door open and aimed his cutlass at the head of owner of the building, who was lying on the bed with his wife.
At that moment, owner of the building identified simply as Lawal, who was jolted from sleep by the noise, stood up and raised his leg in defence, where the cutlass landed.
Lawal, it was gathered, put up an act of bravery as he struggled to disarm the intruder. In the process, he was inflicted with deep cuts on several parts of the body.
When Vanguard visited the scene, there was blood stain in the bedroom and toilet through which the suspect came in.
The victim told Vanguard that the struggle lasted for close to two hours before he eventually disarmed the suspect.
During Vanguard‘s encounter with the suspect, who had deep cuts on his head and legs, he blamed his indulgence on hunger, disclosing they came from Alaba, Ojo area of the state to rob.
According to him, “I live at Owoiya Street, Ojo. One of us, Lekan, who once lived here in Isheri Oshun, brought us here.
“This is my fourth time of operating here. What we do is to tear our victims’ window net with blade, remove the glass and burglary to gain entrance into their apartment.
“We usually collected phones and cash to sell at Alaba Rago.”
