EFCC Boss Charged For Contempt Over Disobeying Court’s Order

A contempt charge has been filed by an Abuja High Court against the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, for allegedly disobeying a court order.
The contempt charge is asking Magu to show why he should not be committed to prison following the EFCC’s refusal to obey orders issued by Justice Peter Affen of the Abuja High Court in respect to the unlawful arrest and detention of an Austrian security expert, Wolgang Reinl, in which the agency was found guilty.
The applicant, through his lawyer, Mazi Afam Osigwe, said that Mr. Affen has ordered the EFCC to immediately release Reinl’s international passport, check books, and cell phones among other properties, which were unlawfully confiscated from him in December 2015 when his residence at Abuja was illegally invaded and ransacked by the agency’s operatives.
The judge also ordered the EFCC to pay Mr. Reinl N10m as compensation for his unlawful detention from December 28, 2015 to February 5, 2016.
