Confirming it commitment and effectiveness to its duty in cubing the activities of persons dealing with illegitimate drug, the Adamawa command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), disclosed that it has apprehended over 160 drug addicts with the seizure of 500 tons unlawful drugs with this year.
The NDLEA State Commander, Yakubu Kibo, who disclosed this figures in Yola at the weekend during an interactive session with journalists, said a total of 164 people were arrested over drugs and other related offences, out of which 64 were convicted within the period under review.
The commander said that the latest arrest by the agency this month was that of a truck conveying 620 Kg of illicit drugs from Onitsha to Mubi and which was arrested at a Girei Check point.
He said that the vehicle was intercepted by operation `Safe Heaven’ recently launched by the command to stem the flow of hard drugs into and out of the state.
“On August 9, at about 6:30 a.m, a white color IVECO trailer with registration number YLA 562XM conveying assorted goods from Onitsha to Mubi was intercepted along Girei-Mubi road.
“After our officials conducted search, 17 cartons containing 225mg of tramadol tablets weighing 620kg were discovered neatly concealed in the truck.
“The driver and other three occupants in the vehicle were arrested in connection with the seizure,’’ Kibo said.
He said that investigation was still ongoing to determine the level of the suspects’ culpability in the matter.
