Extra Judicial Killing: CLO, Others Commend Reps Over Motion On ‎Police Killings In Bayelsa, Rivers

The Civil Liberties Organisations (CLO) on Thursday led ‎other stakeholders to shower commendation on the members of the House of Representatives led by the member representing Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency in Bayelsa State, Hon. Douye Diri over a motion moved to summon the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba over alleged killings of innocent persons in Bayelsa and Rivers states by the police.
‎Hon. Douye Diri had on Tuesday on the floor of the Federal House of Representatives moved a motion with a resolution calling for the House to commiserate with the families of the victims whose lives were brutally ended by the Police/JTF and also observe a minute silence in their honour and to investigate the circumstances of the Killings.
Also resolved was for the House to invite the Inspector General of Police & any other culpable agency to appear before the House Committees on Police Affairs and Human Rights to give insight into these extra judicial killings and the steps taken to prevent such reckless and avoidable killings in future.
The Bayelsa Stakeholders, made up of the Chairman of the CLO, Chief Nengi James, ‎the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Bayelsa Governor on Political Matters, Hon. Miriki Ebikibina, the State Chairman of the Voice of the South South, Barr. Alex E. Dumbo and the State Coordinator of the Environmental Right Action (ERA), Morris Alagoa commended the move by Hon. Douye Diri, describing him as worthy ambassador in Abuja.
According to the Chief Nengi James, “CLO commend Hon. Douye Diri on motion against increase extra-judicial killings in Bayelsa, ask IGP to sign undertaking for Police conduct. The motion, moved by Hon. Douye Diri, is a clear affirmation of the earlier worry expressed by the CLO and the call on the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman ABBA to caution his men in Bayelsa State and other states of the region.”
“Despite the fact that the people of the region desire protection from violent crimes, they should not be used as shooting targets by under trained personnel without due consideration. We also call on the members of the National Assembly to prevail on the IGP to set up an independent monitoring and prosecution team to handle cases of extra judicial killing perpetuated by men of various security agencies.”
In his opinion, the State ‎Chairman of the group known as the Voice of South South, Barr. Alex E. Dumbo, commended the initiators of the motion and said ” The IGP must be further charged to call both his men and trigger happy soldiers to order and stop provoking the peace loving people of Bayelsa State. “
” Perhaps the police and military should take a step towards efficient training and retraining of their personnel to avoid this tide of crude and unprofessional handling of arms which is more of an invitation to anarchy. ‎”
‎Also speaking, the Political aide to Governor Dickson, Hon. Miriki Ebikibina noted that the motion of extra judicial killings of the innocent bayelsans by the police and the military joint task force, sponsored by Hon Douye Diri, is timely and commendable.
According to her, “‎it would not have come at a better time, following the senseless killings of defenceless and innocent citizens from bayelsa and rivers state respectively. The motion is timely and needful to check the level of impunity and unprofessionalism conduct among the security operatives, most especially in a provocative and vexatious way they handle issues that bothers on purely civil matters.”
“The motion is commendable and a wake up call to the law makers to check the excesses of the trigger drunk security operatives and enact laws that will curb the level of impunity and senseless killings of innocent Nigerians, with guns bought of tax payers money.”
