As the ongoing Championship of African Nations (CHAN) proceeds to another stage, the host, Rwanda edged out Gabon 2-1 to advance to the quarter final of the tournament.
Rwandan player Yannick Mukunzi was deprived his seventh minute attempt when the Gabon goalie Bitseki Moto dealt with the situation. Also Dorian Nono of Gabon rounded goalkeeper Eric Ndayishimiye but it was the pole that denied the Gabonese 14th minute effort.
Ernest Sugira opened scoring for Rwanda after an excellent work by captain Jacques Tuyisenge 3 minutes to halftime.
Sugira quickly added his second and made it 2 nil to the Amavubi two minutes into the second half. While Gabon reduced the deficit to one through Aaron Boupenda’s goal in the 59th minute.
Rwanda’s Celestine Ndayishimiye nearly found the back of his own net but was lucky the ball went wide in the 62nd minute.
Gabon-men were reduced to 10 men when Tchen Kabi was cautioned for the second in the game a minute later.

Stevy Nzambe struck Rwanda’s crossbar with a free-kick from outside the box 7 minutes from final whistle.
Rwanda qualify to the quarter final of the tournament with six points from two games with a spare.
The Panthers still have hope of making it out of the group despite losing to Rwanda.
