Operatives of Ekiti State Police Command have arrested one Onibile Kolawole ‘m’ aged 29 years, an employee of Ekiti East Local Government, Omuo-Ekiti and native of Ilawe Ekiti for attempted kidnap and murder of the Council NULGE President, Mr. Ajimoko Olubunmi. The hunt for the suspect began on 6th March 2014 when he placed an anonymous call to the victim demanding for deposit the sum of one hundred and fifty thousand naira (₦150,000) into a specified bank account else, the victim would be eliminated. The suspect claimed he was contacted to kidnap and execute the victim but for his benevolence to him in time past, he would spare him only if he can pay the sum of money requested. On the receipt of the complaint, a dragnet was set up by the police to apprehend the suspect and was subsequently trapped on 19th March, 2014 when he wanted to withdraw the sum of money paid into the designated account.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect has several bank accounts opened with different names. He also has lots of identity cards with different names but same picture. The suspect confessed to the crime but claimed was not sent by anyone and never meant to kill him. He said he devised the means to threaten life out of the victim when he ran into financial difficulties. He also said he targeted the NULGE president because he was of the view that he can afford the money requested. Meanwhile resolute effort is being made to determine whether the suspect was working in isolation or with a criminal gang to exploit innocent. He will be charged to court by the police as soon as investigation is completed.
