When president Goodluck Jonathan announced the retirement of Lieutenant General Azubike Ihejirika as chief of army staff, there was jubilation and excitement written on the face of powers that be, especially in Government House Umahia, little wonder, a day has not gone by without him receiving visitors especially from the political class. His palatial mansion has turned to a mecca of sort. A source in Government confided in this magazine that Governor Theodore Orji told Jonathan if he still wants People Democratic Party, PDP to win and still control the state, a credible and reliable person should be presented for the 2015gubernitorial elections. According to the source, he said the president is not comfortable with the loyalty of political jobbers in the state. Gov Orji then suggest Ihejirika’s name to Jonathan. After series of consultations, his name emerged top. Being a serving military officer, he has to be retired. To erase suspicion, his other service chiefs were sacrificed to go with him. Political gladiators in Abia are saying that they can’t accept the General who has no political sagacity and that they will rather decamp to opposition party if their wish is not respected. With this development PDP might experience another herculean task in conducting the primary election in the state.
