Former Senior Special Assistant to immediate past president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan on public affairs and now the South West leader of Accord Party, South West, Dr Doyin Okupe has urged candidates of the party during the last local government elections in Lagos State not to be discouraged by the outcome of the election but work harder to ensure the party’s victory during the 2019 general election in the state.
Dr Okupe, who recently defected to Accord Party from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated this at a meeting with the candidates last weekend in Lagos.
The medical doctor-cum politician appreciated the efforts made by the candidates during the council polls and lamented that 57 years after obtaining independent, it is unfortunate that Nigeria cannot conduct free and fair election.
“It is a disgrace that 57 years after independent, Nigeria cannot conduct free and fair election. It is even more disheartening that electoral body, the Department of State services (DSS) and the police are all accomplices in this but I know a time will come when Nigerians can freely go to their polling booths and elect leaders of their choices,” Okupe said.
The Accord South West leader further counselled the candidates to go to their respective wards and mobilize the electorates since the party appears to be only alternative political party to both APC and PDP.
“Through our actions, the electorate must see us (Accord members) as the true alternative to both APC and PDP, therefore, we must work hard to ensure that our party emerges victorious in 2019,” he said.
In his own contribution, the national Vice-Chairman, South West, of the party, Prince Kayode Ojo, advised the candidates to adhere to the instructions given by the party leaders in the zone, so that the party become the beautiful bride, not only in Lagos State but the entire south west zone.
His words: ”I don’t have much to say since Dr Okupe has said it all but my advice to you all is to adhere to the instruction he has given and I am sure we will emerge victorious in Lagos and the South West in 2009.”
Also speaking, the board of trustee chairman of Accord, Rev. Isaac Adeniyi Adebayo advised all the warring factions in the party in Lagos State to come to the round table and settle their differences since; ”In unity we stand, and in division we fall.
“My advice is that all warring factions in the party should come together and settle their differences because we cannot go in to the 2019 elections a divided house since we are going to face an incumbent government. We must unite to face the battle.”
The meeting was attended by the accord party candidates for the last local government election in Lagos state, member of the Lagos state care taker committee led by its chairman Engr J. Ola Beckley and some party members from the twenty local governments and thirty seven local council development areas (LCDAS) in Lagos state
