Police have arrested some masqueraders in full regalia for allegedly harassing and robbing the residents of Elere, Agege in Lagos State.
The State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgar, paraded the suspects at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja.
They were said to have been arrested on Wednesday evening by a team led by the Divisional Police Officer of the area and which included operatives of the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad.
The masqueraders and their followers allegedly resisted attempts to arrest them, resulting in sporadic shooting in the area.
Edgal said: “When I received the complaint of the masquerades, some decoy teams were sent to the area and the masquerades and their handlers were all arrested.
“They were only using the opportunity to rob some residents of the area.
“The masquerades don’t have the authorised permission of the traditional ruler in their community to come out because traditionally masquerades don’t just come out without a purpose.
“We have warned repeatedly that masquerades parading themselves on the streets of Lagos will not be tolerated henceforth.”
