The city of Lagos in Nigeria is hosting its first ever fashion week dedicated to plus-size women — and it’s a roaring success.
The event started on September 8. In an interview with BBC, the organizers said it is aimed at celebrating plus-size women who are often overlooked in the fashion industry.
Temi Aboderin-Alao, founder of Plus Size Fashion Week Africa, said: “I feel as if it’s time for the plus-sized woman to be celebrated in their own unique way.”

She added: “There is a market for plus-size fashion in Nigeria and in Africa as a whole. Why wouldn’t we want to cater to the majority, to the masses of the people?”
While the initiative has been a success, some critics have said it promotes obesity by glamorizing it. However, most people have embraced it as an opportunity for larger women.

One of those who have benefited is Praise Oulaye, who has landed a plus-size modeling contract at an agency in London, UK.

Praise said: “I lost hope at first because I was big and we are not actually appreciated in Africa. Then, thanks to this show, it actually brought all the plus-size ladies to be proud of their bodies.
“It’s made them proud of their bodies and to show their curves. They are beautiful in their own way.”
