Ambode’s wife, commissioner condemn violence against children

Wife of the Lagos State governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, yesterday condemned violence against children, with a call for holistic actions toward eradicating violence against minors in the country.
She spoke at an event organised by the Ministry for Youth and Social Development to mark the Day of the African Child, held in Lagos. The event’s theme was ‘Accelerating protection, empowerment and equal opportunities for children in Africa by 2030.’
The governor’s wife, who was represented by Mrs. Kemi Durosinmi-Etti, called on stakeholders to ensure that children must be protected from all forms of violence in order to have a safe society.
She said: “Children make up about half of the population in the society; as such if children suffer from violence acts, all of society suffers the consequences of violence against children and children’s rights violation.”
In her welcome speech, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Pharm (Mrs.) Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, restated the commitment of the state to the protection of children from violence acts.
“As I speak, the Lagos State government has in place several legal and social policy frameworks that will ensure protection of rights of children at every stage in life. Lagos is the first in the country to adopt and domesticate the Child Right Law in 2007,” she said.
The occasion featured a debate based on the theme of the celebration. A student of Omole Senior Secondary School, Miss Blessing Samuel beat other contestants to the top prize, while Master Kehinde Daniel of Oregun Senior High School and Miss Oluwagbotemi Ariyo took the second and third positions respectively.
